2013 in South African TV - A Review

It's time for that usually dreaded -- for some -- year in review post that always promises to be fun for spectators. As a TV watcher I've been watching programmes and productions with my Judgy McJudgings face on and committing it all to memory.

This is 2013 in South African TV - the good, the bad, the sad and the ugly:

Single Guys

single guys comdey, zola nombona, sabc 1 comedy, afda students work,

On Monday I was watching (and live-tweeing it, obv) Single Guys on SABC 1. This is a new show that's been on for a while, but got interrupted for the durationof So You Think You Can Dance was on. It took me to getting to the second episode to really get into this show, which I now love. The show stars Motlatsi Mafatse, Thomas Gumede and Thabo Malema as the lead cast. The show features Nolwazi Shange as the lead characters' "we love you like a sister" neighbour and Zola Nombona as Khaya's girlfriend Lerato.

Isidingo: Doing The Most

Isidingo new opening title sequence logo

I love Isidingo. I've been watching it as far back as late primary school/early high school. I was there when we lost Ashely and subsequently Leone Haines. Iwas also there when  Leti Matabane was killed off suddenly. I was there when the Le Rouxs came to town and when the Sibeko family too arrived in dusty Horizon Deep to shake things up and add some glamour. I was watching when Vusi Moletsane found Duncan Haines' body and way back when Refiloe fell pregnant with Bra Zeb's baby. Last year, when their sets burnt down I hurt along with the cast and crew - and perpetuated some whodunit conspiracy theories on social media on the side. When the writers came up with the "a mad man is poisoning Horizon Deep's water" storyline to get everyone onto a new set I clapped and stayed tuned. So I'm a fan.

Chronic FOMO on Isibaya Confessions

It's not a fear any more. It's a lived reality.

isibaya, isibaya thandeka, nomzamo mbatha, isibaya mpiyakhe, isibaya zungu,

It must have been early 2013 when I was visiting one of my mum's friends. I was propped up on one of her comfy sofas - sturdy but oh so comfortable - and doing more of a catch up on what was new on DSTV than I was talking to her. I'm a welfare TV princess who generally watches Satellite TV when I'm visiting people. That's the day I saw the first ever promo for Isibaya - back when the premise was a Taxi rivalry and I got a bit of a Romeo and Juliet varb too. So, I'm sitting there like "whaaat?! Lawdwt, yes! Gimme Satellite TV because I was born ready for this show! I sure was."
As an aspiring writer, TV lover and proud Zulu that promo carried all the things I'd been needing from a South African TV show and didn't  even know before that moment. Back when I used to watch Generations with some fucks to spare (Circa 2007) I enjoyed editing their isiZulu  dialogue. Sometimes I'd edit their English subtitles for the rare gem of dialogue delivered in isiZulu. IsiZulu is electric and segzy but Mfundi Vundla and his people rarely do it justice.

End Game - Three Episodes in

I don't think I've ever been this deflated by a new show. Sure, I've had favourites start going south after being renewed for new seasons -- sharrout to Intersexions for staying trill and on form -- but to be let down by a new show I'd been looking forward to? This is a first and is hugely due to my not letting myself excitedly anticipate new productions.

bubu mazibuko, end game south africa, south african political drama, south african political thriller,

You'll need a bit of background... I read about this new show called End Game a week before its debut. The PR on a local blog just about gave away the whole season. This spoiler made me majorly amped for the new addition to the Mzansi unSure line up. And three episodes in here we are...

Benjamin Le Roux Stalker

isidingo, ben le roux, ben le roux actor, ben le roux isidingo,

We all know that Benjamin Le Roux is a bit of a psycho. You remember how he was responsible for the events that led to the gruesome death of his stepfather, mos? He may have acted like he was being a good samaritan and cleaning up Sofia's mess but we all know he was looking out for number one. Didn't Braam want to remove him from the will for some reason? Yup! And a few days later the old man narrowly missed being chucked down a mine shaft was then held prisoner in his wine cellar then burnt to death. Nc nc nc.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 3

This past weekend the third season of So You Think You Can Dance South Africa had its final curtain call. The finale was a bit bittersweet in that the show was ending and a winner would be crowned  but really great because I wouldn't have to see izicefe that are Sinazo, Lorna and Themba.

Let me start at the beginning. When I heard that the show would be back - after nearly three years off air - the  first thing I wanted to was if Sade would also be returning. Listen, Sade is my entire childhood so I always show up for her. Soon I, along with the whole country, learned Sade was doing bigger and better things and she'd be replaced by Sinazo Yolwa. Yaaaawn. I like Sinazo I just don't think SABC 1 is really her speed. No ma'am. And her mic technique really bugged me! To add salt to this already uncomfortable change they introduced new judges: Lorna Maseko [Lukhele?] and Themba Nofemele. Whaaat? Ok. Keep an open mind sisterrr, I told myself. My first instincts were correct - the judges' table was a mess. Themba constantly seemed like he didn't know what he was talking about - the only way dancers knew he approved of their Kwaito/Pansula/Sibhujwa performances was when he invited them to join him in Soweto. RME. Lorna was just an awkward addition for me and that's the beginning and end of it.
